Intramural Volleyball Rules

 

Volleyball Intramural Rules:

The official NCAA rules will be used except where the below rules apply. You can follow this link to view the NCAA rule-book.

 

Eligibility:

-Limited to Andrews University Students, Faculty, Staff, and Alumni that have received a degree from this institution.

-Each graduated Alumni participant will be charged a $45 participation fee and must provide proof of insurance before play begins. Captains are responsible for collecting the Alumni participation fee and providing payment to the Athletics office prior to your first game.

 

TEAM:

-Maximum of 6 players, minimum 3.

 

SCORING:

-Rally Scoring: A point is scored by a team on every error (no matter which team is serving).

 

GAME AND MATCH:

-A game consists of 25 points.

-A match is two out of three games.

-Each game must be won by a margin of at least 2 points. (30 point cap). If a match goes to a third game, the third game will be to 15 with a 17 point "cap."

-No 3rd set if match is won after two games.

-Team is awarded 2 points for each game won, even if you lose the match. Meaning if you win one of the three games, your team will be awarded 2 points, but the winning team will receive 4 points.

-Year ending tournament will be based on your win/loss record first. Points will only be used in cases of a tie breaker to determine seeding at our year ending Single Elimination Tourney. Every team will compete. If team record and points are the same your head to head competition will b3 used to determine seeding.

 

TIME OUTS:

-Each team is allowed two time outs (30 seconds) per game. 3rd set tie breaker each team will receive one time out.

 

CHOICE AND CHANGE OF PLAYING AREAS:

-For the first game of a match, one of the captains of the two teams shall call the toss of a coin. The winner takes the serve or choice of playing sides. The loser receives the serve or choice of court as the case may be. Teams shall change sides of court at the end of each game of the same match.

-During the third game of a match, the teams shall automatically change courts after one team has scored 8 points. No change shall be made in the player's relative positions or the alternation or rotation of the service because of the change.

 

Special Rules

-One re-serve will be allowed if the server releasees the ball for service, than catches it or drops it to the floor..

-A player may go outside the court to play the ball if he/she does not cross the center line extended, or enter an adjacent court that is in use. The return must pass over the net in fair territory. A re-play can be called if, in the judgment of the officials, the basketball hoop in Johnson Gym interferes with the path of a ball that would otherwise be playable.

 

DEROGATORY REMARKS OR ACTS:

-From the moment when the captains are called together for the coin-toss until the conclusion of the match, the referee shall have the power to warn, declare side-out or point, or disqualify for the game or match, any player, substitute, coach, or manager who commits, in the referee's opinion, any of the following gross violations of sportsmanship: [a] persistently addresses the officials in regard to decisions, [b] makes derogatory remarks about or to the officials , [c] commits acts derogatory to the officials or attempting to influence their decisions or to deceive them, [d] makes personal and derogatory remarks about or to opponents, [e] commits audible comment or visible display derogatory to the game.
